No longer can we rely on just commercial tools and automated processes. Now more than ever, it is important to be able to diagnose inoperable devices and perform device repairs at the board level so we can obtain our data extractions.

Students will gain the necessary skills in how to approach, handle and repair various printed circuit boards not specifically limited to mobile devices, but almost any printed circuit that an examiner may come across. 

Through a combination of lectures and hands on practicals, students will learn indispensable diagnosis skills, troubleshooting resources, and the latest repair techniques utilizing state of the art equipment. 

The course curriculum was developed by our instructors who are experienced repair professionals and expert digital forensic examiners who practice these skills daily. 

This course is broken down into several instructional modules that focus on proper techniques and skills for repairing printed circuit boards and troubleshooting non-working boards. 

You Will Be Able To:

  • Troubleshoot issues on non-working printed circuit boards
  • Identify and repair prior technician errors
  • Repair or replace various surface mount components on printed circuit boards
  • Remove and replace or reattach integrated circuit on printed circuit boards

  • Digital Forensic Examiners, Investigators, and Device Technicians

Prerequisites

  • Foundational knowledge of mobile devices
  • Basic understanding of mobile or computer forensic skills
  • Prior micro soldering experience is recommended, but not required
  • Comfort level with hands-on electronic work
  • Patience and a strong desire to troubleshoot non-bootable devices

Day 1 Overview

  • Repair equipment and resources
  • Overview of Surface mount components and printed circuit boards
  • Microsoldering

Day 2 Overview

  • Using a digital multimeter
  • How to read schematics
  • Commercially available repair software
  • Understanding a boot circuit

Day 3 Overview

  • Device repairs
  • Troubleshooting devices

Day 4 Overview

  • iDevice component repair and replacement
  • Chip replacement and reattachment
  • Non-reballing options

Day 5 Overview

  • Android repairs and boot circuit
  • Using an oscilloscope as a repair tool
  • Understanding pull up resistors

Laptop Requirements

  • Windows PC with two (2) USB A ports.
  • Windows OS
  • macOS with Bootcamp Windows
  • macOS alone will not work (No Virtual Machines)
  • 8GB RAM (minimum)
  • 100GB storage (minimum)
  • You must have admin rights or have the admin password for software installation.
  • NOTE: ALL Windows updates should be done prior to class.
