Taught around the world since  2005, this course is available to students of any level, and requires no previous electronics experience. What Students Should Bring

Students should bring their own laptop running Windows (within a virtual machine is OK) and containing a functional USB interface. The laptop will be used for online research and to control test equipment. Software and drivers will need to be installed.

What Students Will Be Provided With

  • Course presentation and hardware hacking/embedded security reference material in electronic format
  • Grand Idea Studio’s custom hardware hacking training circuit board (one for each student to keep)
  • Equipment to be used during class: Electronics and hardware hacking tools, including a soldering iron, multimeter, logic analyzer/oscilloscope, and device programmer
  • Safety gear

Joe Grand is a product designer and the founder of Grand Idea Studio, Inc. He specializes in the invention and licensing of consumer devices and modules for electronics hobbyists. Joe is a former member of the legendary hacker collective L0pht Heavy Industries, where he helped set the standard for computer security vulnerability research and disclosure. Optional Third Day for Law Enforcement Only

harware-hacking-course-toolsStudents can participate in an optional third day of training. This advanced training day is available to help students reinforce skills learned in the standard course. Additional hardware hacking exercises include firmware extraction/manipulation, experiments with on-chip debug interfaces (such as JTAG), and a side channel timing attack.
